Saint Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste, North Africa, in present-day Algeria. Although raised under the loving spiritual influence of his Christian mother, Saint Monica, he spent much of his youth searching for truth through worldly ambition, philosophy, and Manichaeism.

While teaching rhetoric in Milan, Augustine encountered Saint Ambrose and began studying Holy Scripture more deeply. Following a profound spiritual conversion, he was baptized by Saint Ambrose in 387. He subsequently abandoned his former ambitions, gave his possessions to the poor, embraced the monastic life, and devoted himself to God.

Augustine was ordained a priest in 391 and later became Bishop of Hippo. For approximately 35 years, he faithfully served the Church, preached, cared for his flock, defended the Christian faith, and wrote extensively against the Manichaean, Donatist, and Pelagian teachings.

His best-known works include The Confessions, The City of God, and On the Trinity. His life remains an enduring testimony to repentance, divine grace, intellectual humility, and the restless human search for God.

Saint Augustine is recognized and commemorated by the Orthodox Church, where he is frequently called “Blessed Augustine”. The title “Blessed” is an Orthodox honorific and should not be taken to mean that he is not a saint. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on June 15. Orthodox churches following the Old Calendar observe this liturgical date on June 28 of the civil calendar. In Western Christianity, his feast is celebrated on August 28, the date of his repose in 430.
